in the steps of
Henry Melchior Muhlenberg
"Luther's
Man in America"
|
It was in 1742
that the Francke Foundation in Halle, Germany, sent help to German
immigrants in North America: trained Pastors were needed for the
many settlers and their families. One of them was Henry Melchior
Muhlenberg, born in Einbeck, an ordained Pastor and teacher at the
Orphanage of the Francke Foundations. But Muhlenberg did much more
than just congregational work - he founded an entire church structure.
After his arrival in Pennsylvania he called together The Ministerium
of Pennsylvania which turned out to be the first permanent Lutheran
synod in the not-yet united states of America. And this was just
the beginning of a 45-year ministry in which Muhlenberg cared about
Germans as well as settlers from Britain and the Netherlands. Muhlenberg
did not just become the Patriarch of the Lutheran church in North
America, since he and his wife Anna Maria had eleven children and
founded the Muhlenberg Family dynasty, where generations were active
in the US military, politics, academia, and ministry.
 |
Muhlenberg
originated from Halle (Saale), home of the Francke Foundations
(and, among many other things, birthplace of George Fridric
Handel). Halle Pietism played a highly influential role in
North American church religious history.
The Francke
Foundations, founded in 1698, are a living cultural and scholarly
institution of European scale. More than 25 educational, social
and cultural institutions are gathered on a campus of 14 hectares
in the heart of the city.

They include
a baroque library from 1728, school buildings from four centuries,
the largest half-timbered house in Europe, as well as the
only cabinet of artefacts and curiosities still in its original
setting from the Baroque period. Lectures, concerts, guided
tours and cultural-historically special and permanent exhibitions
take place in the Historic Orphanage built from 1698 to 1700.
Commemorating
Muhlenberg's 300th birthday in 2011 a travelling exhibition,
developed by the Francke Foundations in Germany, is being
hosted at various sites in the USA (> calendar).

All visitors
of the exhibition may be interested in visiting the original sites
of Muhlenberg's origin - as well as Luther sites, other places of
Reformation history, and Germany at all.
Terra Lu Travel,
the B2B group travel specialist for Reformation trips in Europe,
will arrange a hand made, customized trip for your group. A Muhlenberg-tour
to Germany of course includes Muhlenberg's places like Halle, Einbeck,
Goettingen, and Grosshennersdorf as well as other places of the
Pietism like Herrnhut. It will cover Luther sites in Wittenberg,
Eisleben, Erfurt, and the Wartburg. And we may add some "secular
Germany" from Berlin via Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Munich.
Contact the
congregations, church districts, church history associations, and
universities in your area and in the areas where the exhibition
is displayed. With
Terra Lu Travel you will be able to generate your own and specific
Muhlenberg trip!
All itineraries
are samples, based on tours we planned for groups. But no two Terra
