A
week in Luther's steps
Day 1 - Arrive
Berlin
You arrive in Berlin and will be welcomed by your Terra Lu Travel
companion and the modern coach. Transfer to the hotel for a free
afternoon. Time to rest and to get over the jet lag. In the evening
you will enjoy a welcome dinner.
Day 2 - Berlin
- Wittenberg
A full day of sightseeing is planned for today in the German capital.
We'll see the famous sites, including the Brandenberg Gate, the
Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church,
and remnants of the Berlin Wall. In the late afternoon we'll depart
Berlin and drive to Wittenberg for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 - Wittenberg
- Halle - Wittenberg
This morning we'll visit sites in Wittenberg, the city of the Lutheran
reformation, including Luther's house, the Stadtkirche, the University,
and the All Saints Castle Church where Luther nailed his 95 Theses
on the door. In the afternoon we take an excursion to Halle where,
in 1510, Luther awaited the Pope's decision.
Day 4 - Wittenberg
- Dessau - Eisleben - Mansfeld - Wittenberg
We start this morning with a visit to Dessau, including St. John's
church. Then we continue to Eisleben, where Luther was born and
died (in 1483 and 1546). We'll see the churches where Luther was
baptized, and where he preached his last sermon, as well as the
house of birth, and the Luther Monument. Then we proceed to Mansfeld,
nearby, where Luther spent his early years. Return to Wittenberg
for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 - Wittenberg
- Leipzig - Buchenwald - Erfurt
Continuing south this morning, we visit Leipzig. Points of interest
include Augustusplatz, the market, and the church where Bach was
an organist. In the afternoon we continue to Erfurt. Along the way
we stop at a Nazi concentration camp - Buchenwald.
Day 6 - Erfurt
- Coburg - Erfurt
Our morning visits in Erfurt include the University which Luther
attended, St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Severi's Church, and the Augustinian
monastery where Martin Luther was a monk. In the afternoon we'll
take an excursion to Coburg, famous for its bratwurst. We'll see
the Veste Coburg Fortress, where Luther spent some time under protection
while an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire.
Day 7 - Erfurt
- Eisenach - Wartburg Castle - Frankfurt
We continue west this morning to Eisenach, to see sites including
the Luther House, where Luther lived while attending school, and
the Bach House, commemorating Johann Sebastian Bach, who was born
in Eisenach. Then we visit the Wartburg Castle. It is here that
Luther hid in 1521 and 1522, taking on the assumed name of Knight
George, after being placed under an imperial ban. While here, he
translated the New Testament into German. We continue to Frankfurt
where we'll overnight and enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 8 - Frankfurt
to USA.
This morning we transfer to Frankfurt airport, where we board our
return flight back home.
